Health & Safety Officer for WoF (Working on Fire) – Western Cape

1 November 2010 to January 2017 Health & Safety Officer

• Support and ensure Health and Safety Compliance for fire fighters in Western Cape
• 15 bases and submitting all incident documents to FEM of whole province on incidents
• Handle documentation on IOD’s, first aid and near misses – (lost time and non-lost time) inform and check on H&S documentation at bases as well as maintain those at provincial office situated in Pinelands, Cape Town.
• Communicate with head office in Nelspruit – to SHERQ Manager, HOD Head of Health & Safety Department in Nelspruit , Claims Dept at head office in Nelspruit
• Work closely with provincial Operational Manager, AGM and General Manager as well as all operational and functional staff in province from provincial office in Pinelands, Cape Town
• Report to AGM of province for day to day, OHS Manager of WoF, on policy and compliance.
• Visit bases regularly to support compliance and advise regional managers and teams on it : Cape Peninsula, Cape Winelands, Peninsula, Overberg and West Coast
• Liaise with FEM – submit IOD documentation and follow up via email and telephonically
• Liaise with go-between companies on IOD documentation – for provincial hospitals as well as Medi Clinics and private doctors
• Conduct and give input for Health & Safety meetings on provincial level, monthly
• Report to SHERQ Manager on provincial health & safety – all levels
• Liaise with Aviation side when an IOD occurs where aviation is involved, in fire season also then Dispatch and Coordination department and Partners such as Cape Nature, SanParks, FPA and other WoF ( Working on Fire ) members
• Investigations of burn over’s and other IOD’s that take place.
• Manage and advise teams on correct documentation for submitting to FEM
• Input to SHERQ Manager on Safety – regarding PPE ( uniform, clothes that need to be compliant for fire fighters in their duties of Veld and Forest fire fighting )
• Weekly reports, monthly reports, various statistics on weekly, monthly basis – to AGM, GM, SHERQ Manager on all H&S in province – support function to all admin/office personal as well
• In all, adhere to OHS ACT of 1993 in all duties and support all in complying with Risk Management System for WoF.
• Analyse data received and put forward recommendations to management for implementation
